Gwyn S Marathas is an award-winning visual artist currently based in Salem, MA. Known for her expressive, intuitive and visionary work that’s inspired by nature, fantasy, and abstraction, her love of color and texture is instantly apparent.
After earning a BFA in Textile Design/Fiber Art from UMass Dartmouth, Gwyn launched a professional career in textile design, color analysis, and creative entrepreneurship. With a professional background in painting, textile design and weaving, she enjoys exploring color, texture, and serendipity through diverse materials. Gwyn also has an art education, artist residency background, so enjoys sharing her knowledge through workshops, etc., encouraging others to express their own creativity.
Since moving to Salem in 2025, she’s immersed herself in the midst of the city’s rich creative atmosphere, delving into a new phase of deeper explorations. Gwyn’s work moves fluidly between paint and fiber, guided by her enduring fascination with color, texture, and the beauty of nature. Her practice blends intuitive experimentation with materials such as collaged acrylics, textured papers, and monoprints, resulting in paintings that hover between abstraction and representation: curious, layered, and delightfully off-kilter.
Her current body of work includes “Spooky Florals”, featuring quirky botanical portraits infused with mystery and quiet narrative. Alongside these paintings, Gwyn is again returning to hand weaving through her vibrant “Tangled Tapestries” textile art.
Much of this work is presented through “The Peculiar Greenhouse”, an immersive, story-driven exhibition/sales booth where her art, story, and quiet magic entwine. Within this space, visitors discover a resident garden fae, “Simon”, whose quiet presence invites visitors to look closer, linger longer, and uncover small secrets hidden in plain sight. “The Peculiar Greenhouse” appears at select art fairs and special events in the area where collectors can find Gwyn’s signed, original artwork available for purchase. An on-line sales portal is currently in process for the near future.
